The project consisted of renovation of an academic residence building into academic offices and classrooms. Renovation features includes four 2,000-foot deep geothermal wells as part of an overall sustainable design effort, use of re-used, re-cycled, regional and renewable materials, Reduction of lighting pollution and heat island effects, water use reduction, double glazed replacement windows and high efficiency geothermal HVAC.
Knox Hall is the new home of Columbia University’s Departments of Sociology, MEALAC, Middle East Institute, South Asia Institute and the Africa Institute.
Crescent was accountable for overseeing Minority, Women and Local Business Contract and Workforce Compliance for a $ 23 million Columbia University project. Staff provided assistance to Gilbane Building Corp. with the preparation of bid list, maintained a liaison role between project team and M/WBE firms, monitored contractors’ compliance with Columbia’s EEO requirements, analyzed the certified payrolls for conformance with the Workforce goals and developed the monthly reports for the project team and Columbia University. Project was completed with 25% M/W/LBE and 38% Workforce participation.
Crescent also managed the outreach efforts targeted to M/WBEs for contracting opportunities. We created opportunities for Prime Bidders and M’WBE Contractors to conduct business. The event was a success with over 100 people in attendance representing various construction trades. We also had the NYC Dept. of Small Business Service present and distribute information in order to assist M’WBEs apply for certification. Crescent designed and published the “Breakfast Workshop” book that was distributed to all the attendees, as well as, the management of the Registration List and the Set-Up of the Venue.
